How long does bankruptcy last?

If you are declaring bankruptcy for the first time and comply with the conditions set by the bankruptcy trustee, you can usually expect the process to last either nine months or twenty-one months from filing to discharge of debts.

If you do not follow through with the conditions of bankruptcy such as filing a monthly budget, paying the set amount to your estate each month, and attending the two financial counselling sessions, your bankruptcy may take much longer and you will have to appear before a judge, instead of getting an automatic discharge.
