Can I avoid bankruptcy by changing my spending?

If you are considering bankruptcy because you are regularly unable to make bill payments, your best solution may be bankruptcy or a consumer proposal. But if you are thinking about bankruptcy because trying to meet your debt load leaves you worrying about money most of the time and with no room for fun, changing spending habits, negotiating with creditors, and even a consolidation loan can be a viable option.

If you want to change your spending habits, the single biggest tip that most financial advisors give is to pay only with cash. Many studies have shown that people unconsciously spend less when they have to hand over actual cash than if they are using credit or debit cards (see After Bankruptcy: The 3 Steps to Financial Fitness for practical money management tips).

If you have room to make cuts in your discretionary spending and can build the habit of doing so, then you may be able to pay down your debts without filing a consumer proposal or bankruptcy.
