Why must I attend credit counselling in bankruptcy?
One of the requirements for an automatic bankruptcy discharge is that you attend two credit counselling sessions. Bankruptcy trustees are also trained credit counsellors, and you may choose to meet one-on-one or in a group with other people who are going through bankruptcy.
Credit counselling is required so that you have a better understanding of what led you into bankruptcy. You can use this insight and the techniques shared during the counselling sessions to prevent yourself from ending up in a stressful financial situation once again.
You must attend the first session no sooner than 10 days after filing but no later than 60 days from the start of the bankruptcy.
The second session must take place before 210 days have passed since the start of your bankruptcy.
